The Hiteswar Saikia Foundation (HSF) was set up on April 22, 1997, to realize the vision of Karmashree Hiteswar Saikia, former Chief Minister of Assam and former Governor of Mizoram. Late Saikia dreamt of a prosperous Assam, secular and progressive; a state that enshrines the democratic principle of equality and blends progress with rich indigenous cultural traditions. He imagined a state with educated people free of prejudice; where women participate as equals; a region with the space and will to empower all citizens, and especially the underprivileged.
From 1997 to 2019, the Foundation worked on a number of critical issues, including health, women and children’s welfare, disability support, strengthening the Panchayati Raj institutions, capacity building of rural populace and relief and rehabilitation of the destitute and calamity stricken people of NE India.
The Foundation believes in the twin principles of Truth and Sarvodaya as propagated by Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi. It is working towards taking Gandhiji’s ideals to the masses since its inception.
In the present times, dissemination of Gandhiji’s messages among the people, working towards fulfillment of his 11 vows and inculcating Gandhian thoughts among the new generations are some of the objectives that the foundation has set for itself. At the same time, recognizing the efforts of various people and institutions in development of the region and welfare of its people is also something that the Foundation is actively pursuing.
